Real Time Thoughts on Meet the Press + What would LBJ Do?

Johnson's Season in Hell-He's got bigger than usual ears.

(The following are close approximations to direct quotes from the respective speakers, guests and analysts)

On today’s Meet the Press, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D- NY) told host David Gregory that Democrats are going to seek to get 60 Democratic votes after Congress comes back. barring that, Democrats will seek to pass Health Care legislation in reconciliation where only a simply majority (51 votes for aye)  is required for passage.  According to Schumer, the Democrats are making these moves because it seems  less likely that a bipartisan bill will be passed after summer recess.

Hip, hip hooray for partisanship.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R- Utah) decried the yet to be initiated move to pass the bill in reconciliation, when the GOP has taken up the strategy to filibuster the majority of bills that go through Congress.  What is extraordinary and more decriable is the number and frequency of filibusters undertaken by Sen. Hatch’s party, the GOP.

Joe Scarborough (Note, JOE SCARBOROUGH!!!) is saying that bipartisanship is a straw man that does not need to be built: Democrats OWN government in Washington DC.

Tavis Smiley: We have moved away from our first principles in this debate.  We’ve given up on everything we wanted, and now the public option is on the table?  (Smiley thinks, with other true blue liberals, that had Obama not begun the debate with a promise of bipartisanship, he would have the upper hand in tactical negotiations.)

Joe Scarborough: Obama should become more like LBJ

Obama is failing because he can’t get Claire McCaskil* and Evan Bayh* to join with him. If Obama had the support of his own party, he could pass anything he wants to pass.  He should invite Claire McCaskill and Evan Bayh and ask: “Claire, what is it that YOU need? Evan, I know Indiana looks a little different than last year. What is it that YOU need?”

So what would President Lyndon Baines Johnson do to pass Health Care reform today?  In fact, what did LBJ do when he passed Medicare in 1965?

* McCaskill and Bayh are top dog blue dog Senators.
