Abdullah Abdullah, Afghanistan’s Last Caesar?

Mothers and Daughters

The news that Abdullah Abdullah might bow down from the run-off on November 7th, strikes me as a fairly astute move.  I think he’s trying to set himself above Karzai– a statesman: that which Karzai has not been for four years and more–by leaving the scene gracefully.  I’d bet all the money I have that he’s trying to put himself in the running as the man who should have been king, for the next cycle.  Might he have taken a page from Nawaz Sharif’s playbook?

Its worth wondering though, will there be anything left of Afghanistan worthy vying for, worth bleeding for in five years time.
